Assist Prof Dr. João Fernandes | Applied Superconductivity | Best Researcher Award

Assist Prof Dr. Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon , Portugal

Assist Prof Dr. João Fernandes  is an Assistant Professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon. His research focuses on advancing electrical machines through the use of advanced electromagnetic materials and innovative design methodologies to achieve higher efficiency, increased power/torque, and extended lifetimes. With 43 journal articles and 27 conference papers, Dr. [Your Name]’s work includes exploring superconductors and cobalt-iron alloys for high-performance machines. He leads the SEMS4USV project for Frontex, and is involved in projects with the Portuguese Army and PRR. Dr. [Your Name] has also collaborated internationally, notably with Politecnico di Torino, and supervises Ph.D. students. He aims to develop sustainable, high-power electrical machines over the next five years.

Professional Profiles:

🔬 Research Focus

In 2017, during my postdoc, I shifted my focus to superconductor technologies as a solution for achieving high-efficiency, high-power electrical machines. My research delves into modeling and magnetization techniques essential for simulating and applying these advanced materials in complex devices. As a co-supervisor, I guided two Ph.D. students in this field. In 2018, I secured a highly competitive international position as an Assistant Professor at Instituto Superior Técnico. I initiated a new research line exploring cobalt-iron alloys for enhanced magnetic saturation and secured funding for my first Ph.D. student’s research.

🌟 Current Roles and Responsibilities

I am the Principal Investigator of the European project SEMS4USV from Frontex, a researcher in a PRR project, and a collaborator in a research project with the Portuguese Army. Additionally, I serve as an Associate Editor at IEEE Transactions on Energy Conversion (2023-2024) and have been a Guest Editor for several special issues:Superconductors and Magnetic Materials (Crystals, 2023-24)Future Generation Electric Machines and Drives (MDPI, 2022-2023)Electrical Machine Design (Energies, 2020-2022 & 2021)Advanced Manufacturing and Materials for Next Generation Electrical Machines (Energies, 2022-2023)

🌍 International Collaborations

My international collaborations are divided into three main research groups:

2017-2020: Collaborated on the international project “Reducing Energy Dependency in Atlantic Area Water Networks” (REDAWN) with Prof. Helena Ramos (University of Lisbon) and Prof. Modesto Pérez and Amparo López (Universitat Politècnica de València), focusing on optimizing electrical machines for water systems.2019: Contributed to the proposal and now collaborate in the COST Action CA19108 “High-Temperature SuperConductivity for AcceLerating the Energy Transition,” working with a European network on superconductors in electrical devices.2020-Present: During a sabbatical leave at Politecnico di Torino, Italy, I collaborated with Prof. Andrea Cavagnino and Prof. Silvio Vaschetto on cryogenic and superconducting machines, creating the PhD course “High Temperature Superconductors for Electrical” for Politecnico di Torino and the University of Padova. This ongoing collaboration has produced five conference publications and three journal articles.

🎓 Supervision and Teaching

Currently, I supervise two Ph.D. students and co-supervise three others (two at University of Lisbon and one at Politecnico di Torino), focusing on advanced magnetic materials for electrical machines and machine reliability.

🚀 Future Goals

In the next five years, I aim to apply my expertise in advanced cooling and materials modeling, including aging effects, simulation, and prototyping techniques to develop sustainable and high specific power electrical machines.
